Big puffer fish8/11/2023 ![]() ![]() Whilst pufferfish live mainly in saltwater, some species are also found in brackish water, such as the checkered puffer, commonly spotted at the edge of the mangroves in the Caribbean. If you snorkel in Egypt, Israel, or Jordan, you will certainly encounter the masked pufferfish, endemic to the Red Sea. The guineafowl puffer, which is sometimes completely yellow, is also widely distributed on the reefs of the Indo-Pacific, for example in the lagoons of Reunion Island. The white-spotted puffer is common from the Red Sea to the Eastern Pacific, where it abounds on the rocky shores of Costa Rica. Pufferfish, porcupinefish and boxfish are easy to spot when snorkeling the rocky beds and coral reefs of tropical and subtropical seas, often at very shallow depths. Where are pufferfish, porcupinefish and boxfish found? They are a small family of around thirty species found in warm seas. Most species grow to 20 to 50cm in length, but the stellate pufferfish can grow to up to 120cm.īoxfish have a more limited capacity to inflate themselves (only 20 to 30% of their volume), but have a very compact body, and can also release toxins in the event of aggression. Most of the pufferfish species are also highly toxic: some parts of the fugu (species from the Takifugu genus), considered a delicacy in Japan, has enough poison to kill around thirty people. Porcupinefish also have large external spines, making them looking like “spiny balloons” when inflated. Here, encountered in Lagon de la Saline, Réunion Island. The blackspotted puffer, which can be light brown, grey, blue-grey or bright yellow, and sometimes grey with a yellow belly, is common on the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific. With this « balloon » shape, they appear much larger than they are, and are especially more difficult to bite for predators. They have the ability to “puff up” in a few seconds by swelling water if they are threatened or stressed. Pufferfish and porcupinefish are very easy to identify. Puffers and porcupines are known for their capacity to puff up, while boxfish has kind of an exoskeleton, and sometimes small horns. You will not get these exact fish but one very similar and of the same size.You’ll find on this page species belonging to 3 closely related fish families: the Tetraodontidae (pufferfish), the Diodontidae (porcupinefish) and the Ostraciidae (boxfish, trunkfish). ![]() The photos show a variety of different puffer fish I have sold in the past. Every year, people die from consumption of improperly prepared puffer fish! The skin and spines by themselves as preserved here are not poisonous, just weird looking. Yet the Japanese consider puffer fish to be a delicacy when properly prepared. It is estimated that one puffer fish can contain enough poison to kill 30 people. ![]() When alive, the flesh of the puffer fish is highly toxic due to tetrodotoxin, a poison that is 10 times more dangerous than cyanide. The artificial eyes are placed where the real eyes once were. Artificial eyes have been attached to the sides of the face to add to the weird macabre look. There is a translucent wire with hanging loop attached to the top so it can be hung if desired. These are pretty big, about 7 to 10 inches long and 5-6 inches wide. Also they are natural items and often have minor imperfections like a few broken spines, a bent tail, etc, they undergo a lot of preparation and shipping and handling before they finally reach me so please don't expect perfect fish. For such a delicate looking thing, it is actually fairly strong and stiff and the spines will poke you but good if you don't handle it gently. If the gill areas near the fins are wide, those are also sometimes coated with black sealant. The interior meat has been removed though a cut along the topline of the fish that has then been stitched and sealed with black sealant to match the black spots on the fish. This taxidermy has been dried, stuffed, preserved, and sprayed with a protective coating. Translucent gossamer fins stick out to the side like ears. ![]() Sometimes the spines can reach over an inch long and its skin is covered with black blotches which are its natural coloring. This thing is pretty crazy looking taxidermi. These are stock photos, you will not receive this exact puffer fish but one very similar.
