As you read the contour numbers, you will be looking uphill.Īs well as contour lines, maps also show relief shading to help visualise the terrain. Contour lines that are far apart show that the land has gentle slopes. Contour lines that are close together show steep land. These lines join points of equal height and represent the relief or height of the land. Symbols are grouped in themes on the legend. Given the size of the map it is not possible to show all features on the ground. ![]() These features include roads, tracks, rivers, lakes, vegetation, fences, buildings, power lines etc. The legend on a map shows the symbols used to represent features on the ground. List of all english bible translations8/12/2023 ![]() If I want a Bible that a young child can enjoy reading, I will give that child a Good News Bible. If I want to understand the humor, satire, or irony, I will go to the Living Bible or the New Living Bible. If I want to understand the intended emotional impact of the biblical texts, I will pick up a translation like the Phillips or the Message. For example, if I want precise descriptions of certain key doctrines like the Trinity, I will consult one of the more literal word-for-word translations like the New American Standard Bible or Young’s Literal Translation. Still another tension is readability for audiences of different educational levels.Īll these tensions explain why there is a need for dozens of different translations. Yet another tension is how to translate textual humor, satire, or irony. Another tension is whether to stress translating the meaning of a text or its intended emotional impact on the reader. Translators typically are forced to choose whether to stress literal word-for-word translation from the original Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic or to stress thought-for-thought or meaning-for-meaning translation. The growth is such that with the passing of every 15 to 20 years, a new translation is needed to communicate to a new generation of English language readers.Ī tension in all English language translations of the Bible is translation philosophy. ![]() The rapid growth of English language vocabulary accounts for many more translations. Different translations will choose different English words as equivalents for words in the original Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic. The size of the English vocabulary accounts for many of the differing translations. ![]() The number of Koine Greek words used in the New Testament is less than 6,000. The original language for the New Testament is Koine Greek. The translation situation is easier for the New Testament, but only somewhat easier. Furthermore, the number of new words being added to the English language grows by several thousand per year. If one includes names assigned to different species of life and different chemical compounds, the list of English words expands to more than 4 million. A search of digitized English language books reveals more than 1 million different words. The second edition of the Oxford English Dictionary defines more than 600,000 words. 2 Large English dictionaries typically include 400,000 words. English ranks as the language with the largest vocabulary of all time. Biblical Hebrew, if one omits the names of people and geographical place names, has a vocabulary size of only about 3,000 words. Both Hebrew and Aramaic are Semitic languages. Those six chapters are written in Aramaic.Įnglish is a Roman-Germanic language. The original language is Hebrew except for chapters 2–7 in the book of Daniel. The primary reason for the need for so many translations is that the Old Testament poses a big problem. The website grants full access at no charge to 55 different English translations of the Bible. There really is a need for 40-plus translations of the Bible. Their next question usually has to do with why I utilize so many translations. Most are stunned to discover that so many different good Bible translations exist. I frequently shock them when I say I use 40 different translations. With nearly 40 years of ministry experience, Thom Rainer has spent a lifetime committed to the growth and health of local churches across North America.Almost every time I speak, after the formal Q&A session is over, someone will ask me which Bible translation I use. The other translations that gained in the rankings were the NLT, the ESV, the NIrV, and the NVI.

The five main symbols discussed include the conch shell which a symbol of power and authority, the lord of the flies which is the most valuable symbol in the novel, and the beast which is a symbol for instinct of aggressiveness and violence among humankind. Towards this end, the paper focuses on five inanimate objects or symbols that Golding uses to bring his message to the readers. Noticeably, the objective of this assignment is to describe the extent to which William Golding applies symbolism in the novel “Lord of the Flies”. Typically, the thesis is divided into four main parts which include the introduction, literature review, analysis, and conclusion. The characters described on this assignment include Ralph (democratic and civilized leader), Jackson (dictatorial leader), Piggy (a vulnerable character), Simon (a saint and a Christ-like character), and Samneric (identical twins most referred to as ‘bigguns’). This assignment focuses on symbolism that the author applies to reveal or bring out his message in the novel. Ideally, the novel outlines a story of 12 boys who got stranded in uninhabited Island when their airplane crashed. The novel “Lord of the Flies” was written by William Golding prior to World War II. ![]()

Dancing with stars host tom8/12/2023 ![]() ![]() I think I think she’s brought a new life to everything. It’s just so wonderful to have her energy in the ballroom and her expertise as a host in the ballroom. He continued and said that “Tyra is doing an amazing, amazing job. So I think it’s changed the rhythm of the show in a really exciting way.” It just sort of gets a little boring-the rhythm of it. ![]() It doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with it. I think there’s a real danger when a show’s been on for a long time that the audience almost gets bored of the rhythm. “I think it’s taken it to a new pace, in terms of moving faster and just feeling different. I think it’s really refreshed the pace of the show, actually,” he shared. “I think it’s working brilliantly with the one host. It seems like the higher-ups at ABC are digging Tyra too, because he gushed about how great of a job she’s doing. According to him, having one host (instead of two) has been really beneficial in switching up the show’s pacing. Llinares also explained that bringing in Tyra was basically a power move for DWTS. “I think changing the host was all about evolution, it was about making the show feel fresh, making it feel new kind of make it reach out-maybe to a new audience…as well as the audience that’s been there for years.” I think any show like this that has been on many, many seasons needs to continue to evolve,” he said, per Us Weekly. While speaking on ABC’s VirtuFall panel, DWTS executive producer Andrew Llinares explained why Dancing With the Stars chose to replace Tom and Erin, saying it was simply time for a new chapter. While change is hard and this swap upset some viewers, it sounds like there was actually no negative reason behind ABC asking Tom and Erin to waltz away. ![]() If you’re anything like me, you have a blast watching ABC’s Dancing With the Stars! B ut in recent years, things have looked a *little* different in the ballroom, partially because we've got Tyra Banks as a new host (love her) instead of Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews. ABC exec Andrew Llinares says it’s because the company wanted the show to evolve. But, as many key government actors recognized at the time, the detention of Japanese American citizens violated the Suspension Clause, standing as it did at odds with the entire history of the Clause. As this chapter explores, in the face of serious constitutional questions about the propriety of martial law, internment of citizens, and military trials of civilians, constitutional considerations generally gave way to war hysteria. On the mainland, the military imposed curfews, designated huge portions of the western United States to be military areas of exclusion, and ultimately created “relocation centers” across the west to detain over 120,000 persons of Japanese ancestry, including over 70,000 citizens. ![]() Within hours, and suspension and martial law came to rule the Hawaiian Territory. Amusing ourselves to death8/12/2023 ![]() ![]() Huxley’s future world order also envisions massive government and cultural control – though by a completely different mechanism. However, Postman asks us to consider an equally plausible alternative to Orwell’s dystopian future – one described in Aldous Huxley’s 1932 novel Brave New World. Published in the late 1940s, it perfectly captured the fears of many Westerners who, having just defeated fascist Germany in WWII, found themselves headed toward another major conflict with communist Russia. ![]() In his novel, 1984, George Orwell warns of the dangers of totalitarian government control, cultural manipulation, and blind obedience to authority. Television has become our idol of images, dictating its glib guidance to us on every subject imaginable, while we, its unreflective disciples, nod in agreement. Commercials have taught us that there is a quick and easy solution to any problem.(3) Despite their benefits, educational shows have taught our children that learning should always be fun and easy. Political programming has led us to be more concerned with witty one-liners than balanced debate. The evening news has taught us to inordinately worry about issues that often have little practical effect on our daily lives. Of course, most of the lessons we do learn from television are negative. Whatever lessons we may glean from television are always subordinated to its ultimate goal of gaining and maintaining as many viewers as possible. It is a jealous god, and we shall have no other gods before it. The true purpose of television is to keep you watching. Should any of this surprise us? After all, the true purpose of television is not to help you understand opposing views or educate you or help you solve problems. Such vulgar and ridiculous juxtapositions are so common on television that we no longer recognize them.(1) When issues of existential import are presented side-by-side with topics of utter insignificance, society becomes inoculated from serious thought altogether (while simultaneously congratulating itself for staying “well informed”).(2) A Dateline episode on human trafficking is followed by the season finale of Seinfeld. World news coverage of a genocide overseas is punctuated with fast food commercials. More importantly, we become desensitized to the line of demarcation that separates serious thought from the merely frivolous. And emotion slowly encroaches into areas where reason should rule. Contradictions abound in the sea of constantly shifting sights and sounds. Nuance is discouraged, and partisanship is heightened. The public gains a false sense of understanding of complicated policy issues. However, when it comes to serious programming, the results are disastrous. The formula for viewership becomes decontextualization, simplification, and a steady sequence of action – which are all fine for sitcoms and game shows. ![]()

Best squirrel proof suet feeder8/12/2023 ![]() ![]() This feeder has a total of six feeding ports and holds a little more than five pounds of bird seed. The Squirrel Buster Plus bird feeder makes it nearly impossible for squirrels to get to the birds’ food. If you’re curious about some of the best bird feeders with excellent squirrel proof capabilities, below are a handful of them for you to consider. You can also read reviews from real-life customers if you start your research online, which helps a lot in making the right decision. Taking all of these things into consideration will help you find the best bird feeder for your needs. The size and design that works best for your yard. The reputation of the manufacturer of the feeder. What the feeder is made of – never choose wood or inexpensive plastic?.Which method do you prefer for keeping the squirrels away from your feeder?.Factors to Consider Before Buying a Squirrel Proof Bird Feederīefore you go researching bird feeders that promise to keep squirrels away, pay attention to the following factors: If you really want to rely on baffles to keep the squirrels out of your bird feeder, it’s best to purchase a feeder that offers this feature. Some DIY enthusiasts can make their own baffles, but many others are unsuccessful at it. Like the other devices made to keep squirrels away, these work well but only if you choose a commercial bird feeder. Some bird feeders have built-in “baffles,” which are dome-shaped devices attached to either the supporting pole or the suspending wire, and they are there to keep the squirrels from getting to the feeder. ![]() Baffles that keep them away from the feeder Once again, the natural body weight of the squirrels is what causes the spinning to start, so the owner doesn’t have to do anything special to keep the squirrel proof bird feeder. Nevertheless, they do work well and studies have shown that they really do not harm the squirrels. They are usually gentle enough so as not to hurt the squirrel, although some animal-lovers have some reservations about this method of keeping the squirrels away. They work via a motor-driven base that starts to spin every time a squirrel sits on it, causing the squirrel to eventually fall to the ground. These are popular types of bird feeders and work well in keeping squirrels off of them. If they are climbing from below the bird feeder, the metal sleeves usually do not work. Unfortunately, these only work when the squirrels attack the bird feeder from above. Other feeders are made with a metal sleeve designed to cover the bottom part of the feeder whenever a squirrel lands on them. Many bird feeder ports have hatches that cover them and when the body weight of a squirrel is detected, they automatically close so that the squirrel can’t eat the bird seed. ![]() ![]() Special feeding ports that close when a squirrel lands on them That being said, homemade bird-feeding devices aren’t usually very effective, so it’s best just to trust the companies that make these bird feeders because they know exactly how to do it right. In fact, if you’re interested in learning how to make a squirrel proof bird feeder yourself, you could try using something such as chicken wire and wrap it around your feeder. Often, you’ll see wire-like cages or enclosures around the feeder that consist of openings that squirrels are simply too big to put their mouths in.īirds’ beaks are much smaller than the mouths of squirrels, so the squirrels aren’t able to fit their mouths into the opening to get to the bird seed. If you want to know just what to look for to make sure the feeder is what you need to keep the squirrels away, below are a few things you need to be aware of before you buy your feeder. If a bird feeder advertises that it is squirrel proof, you’re likely getting a good feeder that can keep the squirrels away so that bird seed isn’t wasted on them. To find the best squirrel proof bird feeder out there, you have to know what to look for, and that is what this article is here to help you do! What to Look for When Buying a Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder? The bird feeders now on the market are getting fancier by the day, and one of the things manufacturers offer is a bird feeder that keeps the squirrels away.Īfter all, it is frustrating to watch your birds lose their food because squirrels are getting to it first.
